What does the Medway Test 11+ include ?

There are three sections to the Medway Test 11+:

English, Maths and Verbal Reasoning.

The maximum standardised score in each section is 140, with English and Maths being multiplied by 2 and added to Verbal Reasoning to give an aggregate score (maximum 700).   The aggregate score level to include 23-26% of Medway Y6s is published as the minimum "Pass" score to be eligible to apply for a Grammar School place in Medway.

Approximately 2% are added following applications for a Review for borderline outcomes.

Autumn of Year Standardised "Pass" Score
2023 492
2022 488
2021 487
2020 483
2019 490
2018 495
2017 513
2016 521

English

Extended Writing - 40%

This changes each year, but could be: writing a story from a prompt; writing a journal; writing a report; writing a formal letter; writing a speech; or writing a newspaper or magazine article.   Candidates will be expected to be able to write engagingly with correct and appropriate spelling, punctuation and grammar, in the style requested and demonstrating a command of sophisticated vocabulary

Verbal Reasoning

Multiple Choice - 20%

This section focusses on Comprehension and making the appropriate choices for spelling, punctuation and grammar, understanding less common vocabulary, plus some problem-solving, recognising sequences and patterns in numbers and letters and making asociations between groups of words, synonyms and antonyms

Mathematics

(including Non-Verbal Reasoning questions)

Multiple Choice - 40%

Questions scope basic Numeracy (Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division), Fractions, Decimals, Percentages, Ratios, Shapes and Space, Units of Measure, Geometry, Chance and Probability, Graphs and Charts, and rudimentary Algebra.  Alternative multiple choice answers are designed to exploit common mistakes and misunderstandings

Is the Medway Test 11+ taught at school ?

Unbelievably,  NO  !

Funding was changed by the Government in 1976 to encourage local authorities to convert to fully non-selective Comprehensive schools and close down Grammar School education.   Grammar Schools received less funding per child than non-selective schools.

However, a small number of more enlightened Education Authorities, including Kent and Medway, saw the value of retaining Grammar School education and so still have Grammar Schools today.

In 1998, the Government of the day actually made it illegal to open new Grammar Schools; an anachronism which has pervaded ever since.

As most Education Authorities lost their Grammar Schools and cannot reopen them, the National Curriculum now does not consider the 11+ as the nationwide gold standard of primary education and there is no national measurement of attainment.   State Primary Schools are under pressure to focus on the national performance measurements of the National Curriculum, only, and there is no teaching time dedicated to preparation for the 11+.

There is however overlap between the 11+ and the whole of KS2 (including topics which might not be taught in the National Curriculum until year 6), so preparation for the 11+ also benefits KS2 studies and beyond.

Why the Medway Test 11+ ?

The Medway Test 11+ is a selection test, taken within the first three weeks of Year 6, to determine eligibility to apply for a Grammar School place for your child, within the Medway Unitary Education area.

Controversially, where Grammar Schools exist, there are not sufficient school places for the number of children who would benefit from a Grammar-style education, so a "fair" mechanism is required to ration the places to those children ajudged most suitable.   That mechanism is called the "11+" or the "Medway Test" in the Medway area.

The number of Grammar places is restricted to around 25% of secondary school places under an anachronism dating from the 1907 Education Act, where the Government agreed to state-fund an arbitrary 25% of places in private Grammar Schools as scholarships for the most able children from publicly-funded elementary schools, also from the 1944 Education Act which created a nationwide state-funded education system for the first time, including Grammar Schools, but still maintained the notion of 25% for Grammar School places as a percentage of the whole.

This arbitrary figure has persisted unchallenged ever since.

As a result, there are not enough Grammar Education places for children who would benefit from them.

Our Web-based Virtual Learning Environment allows sharing of files and documents without the need for any special software

All you need is Internet access with a PC, Apple Mac, Android Tablet or iPad (the larger the screen, the better).

It also works on smartphones, although unless you have jolly good eyes, you'll probably prefer to work with a bigger display

If you also have a printer, and perhaps a scanner, that's even better, although these are not essential.

Online sessions can be face-to-face audiovisual,

or audio-only, as you prefer

As we work together, we are able to share and discuss what is on the display, and use on-screen pointers and annotation to aid understanding.   It is like sitting side by side in the next chair.

Learners can receive and submit homework on the VLE, and receive feedback on marked work

Year 6 SATs Tuition

Are Year 6 SATs Important ?

Absolutely, YES !

Primary Schools think they are, because they are measured on them nationally

Your child's primary school will put a huge emphasis on English and Maths SATs in Y6 for this reason.

Your child will sit externally marked SATs in English Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPaG), and in Mathematics during the second week of May in Y6.

Science is no longer included in externally marked SATs (only in 'teacher assessments') and so you may notice Science take a back seat in early Y6.

Secondary Schools think they are, because they are measured on their progress based on SATs

Parents should be aware that the Y6 SATs scores for their child at KS2 set the "starting point" for a Government (DfE) calculation of expected GCSE outcomes, upon which their entire secondary school expectations and progress will be measured under " Attainment 8 "/" Progress 8 ".  Secondary schools' performance is measured nationally against targets set for children with similar Y6 SATs attainment.

A higher SATs score attainment in Y6 will oblige your child's secondary school to push for higher GCSE attainment grades for your child, or be measured adversely by the DfE.

Conversely, a lower SATs score attainment in Y6 will allow the secondary school to be measured against lower expectations for your child's GCSE grades and for the whole of their secondary education up to KS4, no matter whether your child had a bad SATs week, or is a "late bloomer".

It is therefore in your child's best interests, for their secondary education and beyond, to achieve the best Y6 SATs outcomes, no matter which secondary school type they ultimately attend

We provide Year 6 tuition to prepare for SATs and to enhance Key Stage 2 learning, to give your child the best launch into secondary education

Medway Test FAQ Questions and Answers

  • When is the best time to start preparing for the Medway Test 11+ ?

Year 4, or at least Year 5.

Independent Schools will have been teaching reasoning skills for the 11+ at least two years prior to the Medway Test, however these are not required for the National Curriculum and so they are not taught in state-funded primary schools.   This places pupils from state-funded schools at a distinct disadvantage.

It is no surprise, then, that pupils from Independent Schools, and those who have been privately tutored, tend to do better at the Medway Test 11+, and prepared candidates secure a higher proportion of Grammar School places.

In no other walk of life would you deliberately go into a test unprepared.

The more time that a child has to absorb and practise new learning, the more confident and able they will be, and the less stressful they will find assessments and tests.

  • Do you tutor children who have neuro diversities ?

Yes, we tutor individuals with neuro diversities, including ADHD and Autism.

    Everyone is unique.

For neuro-minorities, a standardised school classroom lesson creates frustrations, for both teacher and pupil, as the individual doesn’t “fit” the plan for the majority.   The more “non-standard” individuals in a class, the harder it is to manage it for all.

One-to-one tuition allows the flexibility and dynamism that suits the individual, rather than the classroom teacher, and allows the individual to be the majority.

Our Shangri-La is to find a way that is engaging and which allows the individual flexibility and scope for their imagination to roam – sometimes to fly off at a tangent, which is good – to satisfy that present thought and to coax them back to also make progress towards an underlying objective or learning goal.

People with neuro diversities respond better to individual treatment and consideration, and attain better outcomes.

  • What is your average class size ?

    One.

We don't compromise.   We only offer one-to-one tuition focussed entirely on your child.

  • Will you come to my home to tutor my child during the Coronavirus Pandemic ?

During the Coronavirus Pandemic, we are only offering online one-to-one tuition.

This is because a tutor going from house-to-house risks becoming a community "Super-Spreader" for Covid.   We feel that this is socially unacceptable.

We consider that it is more responsible to provide quality tuition online than to run those risks with the community.

  • My Primary School child has SEND (Special Educational Needs or Disability). Does this mean she can’t go to Grammar School ?

    She absolutely can !

She will sit the same 11+ tests with the same thresholds, however special arrangements might be made to be able to access the test ‘on a level playing field’.

You should discuss your child’s circumstances with your school’s Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) as early as possible to facilitate the application to the Test administrators.

A SEND candidate who achieves the required threshold scores in the Test is guaranteed a place at Grammar School, as places are allocated to SEND candidates before others (check the published admission policy on the website of your desired Grammar School).

  • We are considering booking a family holiday for the second half of August. My daughter will be sitting the 11+ in September. Is that going to be a problem ?

The 11+ is now staged right at the beginning of Year 6.   Not only is there no school time then to prepare for the test, but children need some time at the start of term to settle down, reacquaint with their friends and peers and get their heads back into academic learning mode.

If it is possible to book your holiday earlier, it would help your daughter to finalise her preparation for her 11+ in the run-up to the end of August and the start of the new school year.   She will be able to ‘hit the ground running’ and this is a distinct advantage over entering the 11+ still trying to cognitively and emotionally adjust from the holiday.
